Background

CD141, also known as thrombomodulin, is a 75 kDa single-chain type I membrane glycoprotein that serves as a crucial cofactor in the protein C anticoagulant system. It is expressed on various cell types, including endothelial cells, monocytes, dendritic cells, and keratinocytes. When thrombin binds to CD141, it activates protein C, which degrades clotting factors Va and VIIIa, thereby reducing thrombin generation and preventing excessive blood coagulation. Additionally, CD141 is involved in embryonic development and atherosclerotic plaque formation. In the immune system, CD141+ dendritic cells have been shown to produce significant amounts of IFN-α in response to certain stimuli, indicating their important role in immune responses.
