Background
VPS18 (Vacuolar Protein Sorting 18) is a conserved eukaryotic protein that serves as a core subunit of both the HOPS and CORVET tethering complexes, which mediate membrane docking and fusion events in the late endosomal and lysosomal pathways. It plays a critical role in vesicle trafficking, including endocytosis, autophagy, and lysosome biogenesis. VPS18 contains a RING-finger domain, suggesting E3 ubiquitin ligase activity, and has been implicated in viral replication, neurodegeneration, and tumor suppression through its regulation of receptor degradation and intracellular signaling pathways.
