Background
Amyloid beta 1-40 (Aβ1-40) is a 40-amino acid peptide generated through the sequential proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) by β- and γ-secretases. As the most abundant isoform of amyloid-beta peptides, it plays a central role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease by aggregating into soluble oligomers and insoluble fibrils that deposit as senile plaques in the brain. While Aβ1-40 is the predominant species in both physiological and pathological contexts, it is often studied alongside the more aggregation-prone Aβ1-42 isoform, with the ratio between the two serving as a critical biomarker for disease progression and therapeutic monitoring.
