I. Product Background

IL-4 is mainly expressed by activated Th2 cells and natural killer cells, and to a lesser extent by mast cells and basophils. It signals through the IL-4Rα. When bound to its receptor, IL-4 stimulates the proliferation of activated B and T lymphocytes and the differentiation of B cells into plasma cells. It also induces class switching to IgE in B cells, upregulates MHC class II production, and reduces the generation of Th1 cells, macrophages, IFNγ, and dendritic cell IL-12. Like other Th2-related cytokines, IL-4 is involved in the airway inflammation observed in the lungs of allergic asthma patients. The 11B11 monoclonal antibody has been shown to neutralize the biological activity of native or recombinant IL-4.
