Background
Immunoglobulins are crucial components in the humoral immune response of vertebrates, defending against pathogen invasion and infection. The polypeptide chains of immunoglobulins consist of two identical heavy (H) chains and two identical light (L) chains linked by inter-chain disulfide bonds. The amino-terminal region has a highly variable amino acid composition that is involved in antigen binding, while the C-terminal constant regions participate in complement binding, placental and intestinal transport, and binding to cell membranes. Based on differences in the heavy chain constant regions, six immunoglobulin heavy chain subclasses have been identified in rats: IgA, IgM, IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b, and IgG2c.
